Baking Delicious Treats Together

Here at Struan Lodge, we run a varied daily activities programme to support independence and stimulate the brain. One of our residents’ favourite sessions is our Baking Club which everyone loves to get stuck into. The opportunity to get involved in baking a variety of delicious sweet and savoury treats is one everyone looks forward to.
Enjoying our treats afterwards with a lovely cup of tea is a brilliant added bonus! Recently, participants made some delicious cheese scones, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our compassionate care team are careful to make sure residents are safe for the entirety of their time at Struan Lodge, so potential hazards are kept well away from participants.
Our baking club sessions are relaxed and sociable, encouraging conversation and teamwork among fellow residents. The opportunity to chat with like-minded people is so valuable, especially for older people, as it boosts mood and helps combat loneliness. This stress-busting activity is also relaxing and great fun.

Baking is also a strong sensory experience, leveraging the power of taste, smell and touch to encourage reminiscence. Residents love to share stories and memories of special treats made by themselves and loved ones, and swap family recipes with one another. The fine motor skills used while baking supports dexterity and hand-eye coordination, as well as mental stimulation, which can boost brain health and slow cognitive decline.
Residents feel a great sense of accomplishment when there bakes come out of the oven, boosting their self-esteem, confidence and motivation. We’re looking forward to tasting what our talent team bake next time!
