Sunny Days and Social Engagements

Fettes_Volunteering Day

This May, residents enjoyed glorious weather and a wee hand keeping the home nice, as pupils from Fettes College joined us for a day of painting and chatting in our garden. With brushes in hand and smiles all round, the students brightened not only our fences but the spirits of everyone at the home.
May brought us long, sunny days and the perfect excuse to spend more time outside. At Struan Lodge Care Home, we've made the most of every bit of sunshine, taking residents outdoors for fresh air, flowers, and friendly conversation.

We were delighted to welcome a group of bright, energetic pupils from Fettes College, who volunteered their time to paint our back garden fence. As you can see from the photos, they threw themselves into the task with great enthusiasm—and a fair bit of paint! Dressed in overalls and gloves, they got stuck in from the moment they arrived, working together and chatting away with our residents as they went.
Our residents enjoyed sitting in the sun and watching the transformation unfold. One of our ladies even joined in by proudly showing off a daffodil she’d picked from the garden earlier that morning. Her smile said it all. Seeing young people take such care and pride in improving their surroundings brought a real lift to everyone’s day.

There was plenty of friendly chatter, laughter, and shared stories as generations came together. It was lovely to see how naturally the conversations flowed. Many of our residents shared memories of their own school days, while the students listened intently and asked thoughtful questions. It was a simple moment, but one filled with warmth and respect.

The end result is a freshly painted fence that has transformed our garden into a more welcoming and vibrant space. More importantly, though, the visit left a lasting impression on both residents and students alike. The pupils gained insight into life in a care setting, while our residents felt seen, appreciated, and valued. We’re absolutely chuffed to bits that the students will be coming back in September for another volunteering session—and we can’t wait to have them with us again.

If you're looking for a care home where community, companionship and quality of life come first, we’d love to welcome you. Get in touch with Struan Lodge Care Home to arrange a visit or find out more about life here.
