Arts & Crafts

The opportunity for residents to try new activities in a secure and supervised atmosphere is important to us, as it allows them to continue an active and vibrant lifestyle. Our arts and crafts programmes are all tailored to the preferences of our residents, with the purpose of inspiring and motivating everyone who participates. We urge residents to participate in as many classes as possible in order to reap the various benefits that come with participating in a group activity.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy involves using essential oils derived from plants, herbs, trees, and flowers, absorbed through the skin or inhaled, often via massage, baths, or diffusers. Recently introduced in residential care homes, it supports people with long-term conditions such as arthritis, stress, and respiratory or circulatory issues. By taking a person-centred approach, aromatherapists can recommend specific oils to complement individual treatments. Known as “Wonder Oils,” these essences offer a wide range of benefits, including easing cold and flu symptoms, improving memory, enhancing mood, and promoting overall well being

Spiritual & Religious Care in Later Life

Spiritual and religious care encompasses anything that brings meaning, inspiration, hope, or connection, recognising that while some people identify with a particular faith, others are spiritual but not religious. At Struan Lodge Care Home, all beliefs are valued and celebrated, particularly as faith and spirituality often become increasingly significant in later life, supporting physical and emotional wellbeing and enhancing quality of life. For older adults, spiritual connection and belonging to a community can foster purpose while helping to prevent loneliness, isolation, and depression. However, balance is important as spirituality and religion can also have challenges. At Struan Lodge, practices such as inviting choirs to perform or watching Songs of Praise on Sundays are simple yet meaningful ways to nurture residents’ spiritual and religious needs.

The beautiful gardens provide a secure and tranquil haven where individuals can immerse themselves in nature, read, spend time with loved ones, garden, or join in leisurely outdoor activities. Inside, welcoming communal areas such as lounges offer residents the freedom to enjoy quiet time or social interaction, while also serving as versatile spaces for events, entertainment, and special family gatherings, ensuring a balance of privacy, comfort, and community.

Staying Active at Struan Lodge

At Struan Lodge Care Home, we promote inclusive and enjoyable ways for residents to stay active, regardless of ability. Daily chair exercises in the communal lounges provide a gentle yet effective way to improve strength, flexibility, posture, and balance, particularly supporting those with reduced mobility or joint conditions. Alongside this, many residents join our weekly walking group, exploring scenic areas of Edinburgh while boosting mood, appetite, and overall health through physical activity and social connection. Additional activities such as gardening and rickshaw rides further encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors, build friendships, and maintain an active, fulfilling lifestyle.
