Making Special Moments Possible at Struan Lodge Care Home

Before GD moved into Struan Lodge Care Home in Edinburgh, he lived at home with his wife. Over time, he noticed his mobility starting to reduce; at first he struggled to stand up alone, but soon was unable to sit in a chair safely and became mostly bed-bound. As someone who was used to being active and independent, this was understandably frustrating for GD. This distress caused behavioural changes, which was upsetting for his family who were already dealing with the pressure of caring for his physical safety.

Ultimately, GD ended up being admitted to hospital, at which point the decision was made to move him into Struan Lodge. The family-feel and small size of our care home made this transition much easier for the family, who looked to our compassionate staff to relieve the stress of their situation.

Relieving The Pressure

When GD moved into Struan Lodge, he was very distressed due to being unable to leave his bed or his room. The Struan Lodge team knew they had to do everything they could to restore some of the independence that was so important to GD, so came up with a plan tailored to his unique needs.

Assessments with relevant practitioners were arranged for GD. They decided that the best solution would be a specialist chair, along with a wheelchair for outdoors. Thanks to these accessibility arrangements and the thoughtful support from our staff, GD is finally able to leave his bedroom and enjoy a sense of normality again.

Living Life to the Fullest

Today, GD spends much of his time in our communal lounge, socialising, joining group activities and relaxing in the company of his fellow residents. On quieter days, staff bring our engaging activities to him in his bed, and he particularly looks forward to art and music sessions. GD’s daily living has improved massively; he is now much happier and the distress he moved in with is nowhere to be seen.

Most importantly for GD, he is now able to go on outings with his wife and son, who are thrilled at the progress he has made. A trip to Toby Carvery for lunch is always the highlight of his day.

Above all else, GD and his family are over the moon that he will now be able to attend his son’s wedding in June this year, something that would not have been fathomable when he first moved into Struan Lodge. Achieving this special goal is a true testament to the power of a dedicated team and personalised, holistic support.
