Exercise & Physical Activity

Exercise and physical activity play a vital role in promoting the well-being and quality of life of our residents, that’s why we incorporate it into our activities schedule on a daily basis. Regular exercise has numerous benefits that contribute to physical, mental, and emotional health. Engaging in physical activity helps to maintain and improve physical fitness, as well as enhance mobility, strength, and balance. Exercise also promotes cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of future health conditions so we heavily encourage all residents to take part in the physical activities on offer to them.

We also provide 1 to 1 opportunities for those with reduced mobility or who are receiving nursing care, whether it’s providing physiotherapy or help with mobility and strengthening, every resident’s physical health is important to us.

Chair Exercises

We offer daily chair exercises at Struan Lodge that take place in the communal lounges where everyone of all ages and abilities can take part in gentle physical activity. Introducing regular chair exercises means residents who have reduced mobility or who prefer seated workouts can also participate, as inclusivity is important to us. Chair exercises provide a convenient and accessible way to improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion. The exercises can target various muscle groups, helping to maintain or build muscle mass and improve overall functional ability. It can also contribute to better posture and balance, reducing the risk of falls and enhancing stability. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with arthritis or other joint-related conditions.

Walking Group

Many of our residents take part in our weekly walking group, where residents and staff walk a few miles to scenic areas in Edinburgh. Regular physical activity such as walking stimulates the release of “feel-good” hormones, which help to enhance mood and build appetite while improving physical health. Our walking group fosters social interaction and a sense of belonging amongst residents, as our group activities and fitness classes provide opportunities for residents to connect with others and build friendships while enjoying the outdoors. Exercise can also slow down the progression of cognitive decline in residents with Dementia. Many of our residents also take part in gardening which supports an active lifestyle.
